NPC Platform Users?

By Mike Gerholdt· www.freelikeapuppy.tech· ·Intermediate ·Admin ·4 min read
Summary

Understanding how platform licenses interact with Nonprofit Cloud (NPC) licenses and permission set licenses (PSLs) is critical for organizations considering cost optimization. Users who need access to NPC-specific objects or fields require a PSL, which may not be sold separately from full licenses, possibly limiting savings when using platform licenses. The article clarifies that while platform users can handle non-NPC functionality, accessing NPC or Industry Cloud features demands proper licensing, and current PSL assignment limitations can reduce available licenses for human users. This insight helps Salesforce pros navigate licensing complexities and plan user license strategy effectively, especially in nonprofits or Industry Cloud environments.

Takeaways
  • NPC users need permission set licenses (PSLs) to access Industry Cloud objects.
  • Platform licenses alone don’t grant access to NPC-specific objects without PSLs.
  • PSLs are bundled with full NPC licenses and may not be sold separately.
  • Assigning PSLs to platform or integration users reduces the pool for full users.
  • Platform licenses can be used for non-Industry Cloud tasks even with person accounts.

Just after I wrote my post about using Platform licenses , I got an email from a reader asking about the idea of using platform licenses with Nonprofit Cloud (NPC). The funny thing is that I had considered whether or not to mention NPC when I was writing, but, in the end, decided that it would just add confusion and length without helping people. I'm going to leave aside the question of whether an organization should be using NPC in the first place. (I think I've written enough about that elsewhere .) The real questions are whether platform users are compatible with NPC (or any Industries solution like Public Sector Cloud, Health Cloud, Education Cloud, Manufacturing Cloud, Financial Services Cloud, etc.) and how the costs would work . By the way, I'm going to just write "NPC" for the rest of this post. But as I understand it, what I'm writing would apply to any of the industry clouds.
